The Contessa 26 is clearly robust and oversized, and should be considered one of the very best ocean-going production boats in its category. Proof of this boat’s capabilities as an ocean cruiser is evident from the fact that both Tania Aebi and Brian Caldwell chose this boat to set the record as the youngest person to sail solo around the world. The Contessa sails like the best of them. It is extremely stable, two elastic bands to hold the rudder in place are sufficient to keep the boat on course – an autopilot is hardly necessary. When the sails catch the wind, it will heel quite quickly, but then remains stable in the same position, and the gunwales rarely get wet. Due to the nature and origin of this design, the Contessa 26 has a narrow width and limited space below deck, but you can still find four berths below deck.
The starter motor was recently replaced and the battery is from ‘25 – the hull was recently given a new coat of antifouling.
